About the course

To work successfully with the victims of sexual abuse, you must first
understand why and how abusers manage to abuse, and why they (often) get away with it undetected for many years.

This knowledge will help enable you to fully comprehend the very
powerful effects of GROOMING, DISTORTED THINKING, and
NORMALISATION – behaviours that often ‘trap’ the victims of abuse,
preventing them from being able to resolving their issues, and ‘unlocking’
their own destructive behaviour traits.

This course will equip you with a good working knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding Sexual Abuse; from the victim’s, perpetrator's and therapeutic perspectives.

"The division that exists between those who work with offenders and those who work with victims is an artificial one. It is as essential for those who work with offenders to understand victim behaviour and the impact of offending upon victims, as it is for those who work with victim/survivors to understand how the offender operates to control his victim, and how he abuses within the community."
Ray Wyre (1998)

The course will be based entirely around REAL case histories: some of which will be presented live on the day. Every delegate will receive comprehensive notes, an attendance certificate, and proof of 14 hours CPD. The course will be presented in a dynamic, colourful, and where possible, light-hearted manner, in order to facilitate a good group dynamic, and ease of learning.

Please beware that the course will go into depth about many emotionally-charged subjects, and delegates who are not used to discussing such subjects openly, may find the training quite challenging. It is for this reason that we also suggest delegates take up the special B&B price at the hotel (only £35 per night) in order to unwind and ‘de-brief’ on the Saturday evening.

This is a Module of the IAPH Advanced Diploma Programme - Successfully complete 8 modules, and you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Hypnoanalysis

comprehend, was resolved so easily with you - in just one session
You made is so easy for me to to talk about it, and I now feel better than ever. Thank you so much for giving me back my life. After the rape I never thought I would ever be able to feel ‘normal’ again.

Some comments from previous course attendees:

Rob, this has to be one of the best courses that I have ever attended (and I have attended a lot of courses!). . . .the content was packed full of information and this difficult subject was presented in a down to earth, easy to understand, light hearted manner that made it more comfortable and easier to take in, absorb and learn. . . I was amazed and impressed at how well you treated everyone, lunch on both days, drink at the bar, mini cabs, night on the town.  I think that you should feel proud of yourself for the way you operate and the way you treat your members and the way that you treated us.  We will certainly attend other courses with you, if that's ok and thankyou again Rob for a first class course.
David Birch ICHP, Hypnotherapist

Once again another superb workshop run by Rob!  His style is entertaining and hugely informative. I have worked with quite a number of victims of abuse and this workshop has given me a much greater insight into the types of abuser and how they groom both the victim and those around him/her. All of this will help me enormously when working with my clients to help them to make sense of how they were groomed to help them resolve their conflict and take control of their lives. It will also be very much easier to spot any grooming should it ever happen around my friends or family. A great workshop – one you really must attend!
Penny Albertella, Hypnotherapist

A great course seminar which is invaluable for a therapist wishing to deepen his or her understanding of the behavioural and nurturing issues which need to be addressed when dealing with the effects of the abuse of children.
Terry Shadwell, Hypnotherapist

The sex abuse course was informative, engaging, thorough and better yet applicable to my day to day work in my own practice. Rob’s style of presentation is class participatory, approachable and really, really easy going. It was enlightening to get the perpetrator’s perspective / pathology as it can be difficult to comprehend how abuse is even possible, by what can be otherwise normal and lovely people. There was a wonderful, open and friendly atmosphere among the participants. We were all encouraged to go out on the first evening to unwind – which shows extra care and understanding to make sure everybody is OK with what is being presented.

I never knew I could sit through two days of sex abuse material and have so much fun. It is both a testament to Rob’s open and humorous presentation skills and also to pure hypnoanalysis itself. Having just completed the therapy myself I was not ‘triggered’/upset in any way, and given that every area of abuse was covered, this was a wonderful test of the effectiveness of the therapy.
Ailish McGrath, Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist

Great course, a real must attend for all therapists to gain a greater understanding of this subject, and considering the content, presented in a light hearted manner. What really stands out is the associations and its members who are all so friendly and supportive and make everyone feel so safe and comfortable.  If I had to sum up the weekend in one word I would say "comfortable".
Nicky Delacy

A potentially very heavy and serious subject was once again delivered in a light and manageable way. This enabled us to absorb the information, knowledge and experience available to us over two days.
This course introduces us into the world of the abuser. More importantly, it gives us a vital understanding of the victims experiences, without which it would be very difficult for us to help them.
Kieran Fitzpatrick, Hypnotherapist

I would like to thank Rob Kelly for providing the "Sexual Abuse and Sexual Offending" course. While this topic is very serious, Rob's knowledgeable presentation was delivered succinctly, compassionately and with a sense of humour that in no way detracted nor demeaned the topic.
I now understand sexual abuse in a much more comprehensive way as the focus was not solely on the victims, but on the pscychology of abusers. This one day course is vital to the therapist's better understanding of their clients and I highly recommend attending  future courses.

Ron van der Holt, Hypnotherapist

Since attending this course I would doubt anyone to be fully equipped as a therapist without knowledge gleaned from this. To fully understand the mind set of an abuse victim, it is essential to also understand the mindset of the abuser and the impact this will have on therapy. I feel better prepared now to help the client who has survived either  physical, emotional or sexual  abuse as this course covers every aspect.
Caroline Hamblin, Hypnotherapist

This course is an essential professional development course for all therapists and councillors involved in dealing with the results of abuse. It gives a greater understanding of the distorted thinking and patterns of behaviour of abusers and the effects on the abused. The material is powerful and challenging but ultimately leads to a shift in perspective that can only be of benefit to all who attend and I highly recommend it.
Keith Jones, Hypnotherapist

I attended Robs excellent course ,dealing with sexual abuse and it,s perpetrators. I not only found it interesting and informative in the extreme. But a cathartic experience, and an invaluable tool for achieving self understanding. As the grooming methods of abusers were explained, it became very easy to apply to ones personal experience some of the methods described. Because of this course I feel totally confident in my dealings with the unfortunate victims of the many kinds of sexual and personal abuse.
Danny Nuttall, Hypnotherapist

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the course, it’s always good to meet the gang and it goes without saying that (as usual) I  got a great deal out of the experience, as there is something new to learn each and every time. The sense of community among the members is truly valuable.
Brian Brown, Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist

I think this course is an absolute "MUST" for all therapists, regardless of the type of therapy they practice.  Less that one week on and I have already put the insights gained on the course to good use in the therapy room. Having been in practice for a couple of years now and done lots of reading around the subject, I thought I had a reasonable grasp of how Grooming and Sexual Abuse may affect therapy, but it soon became clear my previous understanding was somewhat limited to say the least. Although the subject matter of this course is emotionally challenging, I came away with a really positive feeling that I would be able to assist my clients much more effectively when they are resolving and facing up to abusive experiences of the past. Not only will I be booking myself on more of your courses Rob, I will most definetly be attending this course again.
Richard Brent, Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist
